Benchmark’s editor Joanna Yang said of the firm’s win:

Singapore disputes boutique firm Eugene Thuraisingam LLP wins Benchmark Litigation Asia Pacific 2020 Boutique Firm of the Year. This was a highly competitive category given the prominent shortlisted firms across the region.

During the awards period, the team was entrusted with landmark and some of the most complex domestic and cross-border disputes, with managing partner Eugene Thuraisingam leading the charge. The firm demonstrated its expertise in commercial litigation and arbitration as well as criminal defence litigation.

Among the highlights, the team acted for a former senior financial services director in a successful negligence claim against AXA Insurance Singapore for damages assessed at US$2.36 million. The team succeeded in arguing a novel point of law before the Court of Appeal (CA) concerning the standard of care in tort and the legal obligations owed by a former employer in preparing performance references for an employee. The CA accepted for the first time in Singapore’s legal history that employer AXA had breached its duty of care in preparing a bad reference check, which deprived its former employee of subsequent employment.

The firm also acts in various confidential legal matters in Singapore arising out of alleged embezzlements from an investment fund.

The award celebrates our success in complex, high-value disputes and affirms our exceptional and innovative legal practice. We especially thank our valued clients, business partners, Bar colleagues and friends who have trusted us with their disputes.
