Eugene Thuraisingam was honoured to receive the award in recognition of his track record of pro bono service to the community. Eugene said:
I am truly honoured and humbled to receive this award from The Law Society of Singapore.
Lawyering is not just a profession, but also a calling.
Living and practicing in a hyper-competitive and ever-changing society like Singapore, it is inevitable that some members of society may fall through the cracks. It is my firm belief that we owe a duty to help those who have been left behind to the best of our ability.
In this regard, the team at Law Society has been doing tremendous work in improving access to justice by connecting people in need of legal aid with lawyers. In particular, the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme has been very successful in providing legal assistance to those who are facing charges for non-death penalty offences and are unable to afford a lawyer.
Although there may never be a perfect system, we must continuously work towards improving access to justice, especially for the downtrodden. My team and I at Eugene Thuraisingam LLP are happy to be able to do our part and will continue to strive towards improving access to justice for all.
The Pro Bono Ambassador is an annual award given by the Council of the Law Society to an individual in recognition of his/her established track record of providing pro bono services for a period of 5 or more years, as determined by the Council of the Law Society.
In previous years, the Pro Bono Ambassador Award had been presented at the Law Society Annual Dinner. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Law Society Pro Bono Services have come up with a novel solution, where the President of the Law Society Mr Gregory Vijayendran SC, presented the award to Eugene in person, in our office.
Our heartiest congratulations to you, Eugene!
