Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) Accredited Mediators

Qualified Singapore Mediation Centre (“SMC”) Accredited Mediators

1. Syazana and Johannes – SMC Accredited Mediators

Eugene Thuraisingam LLP is delighted to share that Syazana Yahya and Johannes Hadi recently received accreditation as mediators by the Singapore Mediation Centre.

2. Singapore Mediation Centre

As Singapore’s flagship mediation centre, and one of four designated mediation service providers (Notification number 3760 of 2017) in Singapore, SMC sets the standard for excellence in dispute resolution services. A key feature of mediation settlements administered by SMC is that it can be converted into a court order that is immediately enforceable.

The effectiveness of mediation is evident from the fact that approximately 70% of SMC’s cases are resolved and 90% of them settled within one day. The disputes span across a wide range of industries including construction, banking, employment, shipping and tenancy disagreements. SMC also facilitates mediation of contested divorces and its related matters, family feuds, and negligence and personal injury claims.

SMC also provides training in mediation with their highly rated and interactive courses taught by an experienced training faculty who combine the Harvard model of interest-based negotiations with a unique understanding of cultural nuances necessary in mediating disputes in Asia. One of their credentialing systems offered is “SMC Mediation Skills Assessment Accreditation”.

3. The Journey to Becoming an Accredited Mediator

In November 2019, SMC conducted its programmes (1) Strategic Conflict Management for Professionals (“SCMP”); and (2) Mediation Skills Assessment (“MSA”), where both Syazana and Johannes were a participant.

The SCMP was conducted over five consecutive half-day online sessions (and one half-day for the role-play practice at the Supreme Court) instead of a three-day programme. This highly interactive programme builds on the basics of interest-based mediation which focuses on finding solutions based on the interests of disputing parties and dispute resolution concepts.

Heartiest congratulations, Syazana and Johannes!
